Sarchí - Costa Rica
Sarchi Norte is the main town in the canton of Valverde Vega, in the province of Alajuela in Costa Rica.
Sarchi Norte district, covers an area of 15.11 km ², including the central area of the city. It has a population of about 8000 inhabitants. Sarchi Sur district has an area of 6.51 km ², and has a population of more than 5000 people. The city lies at an altitude of 970 meters above sea level on the slopes of the Cordillera Central to the eastern edge of the Central Valley, 27 kilometers northwest of the province of Alajuela and 46 kilometers from the capital city San José.
Sarchi is the most famous crafts center of Costa Rica. The city offers more than 200 furniture stores and small factories of wood crafts and souvenirs which produced tableware and kitchenware, as well as folding wooden rocking chairs and leather. The most popular items are traditional paintings drawn carts, used in the past for carrying coffee from the mountains to the Pacific port.
